Big Sister…Every Boy Should Have One
A big sister is a buffer from the world.
Every little boy should have one.
Mine protects me
even though I’ll be bigger than her someday.
She gives attention when Mom and Dad can’t,
and holds me in my room when I’m punished.
She sees me in the corner
playing with my one-armed soldier or looking out a window
when everyone else is busy,
and takes my hand and leads me to some distraction.
She tells me I am handsome and strong.
She rushes to stand in front
when bigger kids take advantage,
and shields me from crazy geese at the park,
even though she’s more scared of them than I am.
I picture her as the gray-eyed heroine in every book read to me.
She gives me a dollar and eight cents,
and drives me to the store
to spend it on cheap little army men,
but they are just what I want.
When it’s too hot outside to play,
she takes me out for a blue snowcone,
and doesn’t get upset (like Mom) when I spill it down my shirt.
She says we won’t tell Mom it spilled in her car, either.
We clean it up together.
We’re a team, the oldest and the youngest.
She makes excuses for me
when I get caught being bad.
She says she is also “mischievous,”
that it’s somehow just easier for our brothers to behave
than for her and me.
Everyone says she’s a grumpy teenager,
and she’s not home much anymore,
but she calls me “Baby.”
She has a nice boyfriend I like to play with.
She calls him “Baby,” too.
He’s really tall…
I’m rough with him sometimes, and he smiles.
He also knows how special she is.
My life will sure change a lot when she leaves for college.
She tells me that no girl will ever be good enough for me,
and she’ll be mean to them all.
She’s the most beautiful girl I know.
I whisper to Mom, “I’m gonna marry Annemarie when I grow up.”
Mom laughs and says, “Aw, Sweetie, she’s your sister.”
And I whisper back,
“I know. I love her.”

Oh, this was SO sweet.

lol. i can heartily agree, being a younger brother myself
apparently i didn’t speak until i was five, and when asked by a speech therapist why and what was wrong i replied
‘i don’t need to, i’ve got Cathey’
no but seriously, it’s a great dynamic. we’re not as close as we were, but i’d still protect her from anyone and anything i could.
thanks Galvanised, for you kind reply and touching posts, reminding me what’s important in lifexx.
Just lovely - this is one post you must present your wee boy and your daughter, complete with pictures when the right occasion presents itself - as if when your boy might be going into a new direction in life as he is older - to remind him of the special realtionship these two have , and will always!
