Mara Vanderslice Introduces the Christian Left

 maravanderslice.jpg

I recently saw this passionate young woman interviewed on Monday by Stephen Colbert (my crush) on Colbert Report and enjoyed hearing her views.  This political consultant has most recently been appointed by John Edwards to get the Dems back in touch with evangelical Christians, especially Catholics, and introducing people to the Christian Left.  As many Christians feel alienated by both parties — by Dems for years spent courting the liberals and their agenda, and the GOP for those Christians who oppose involvement in Iraq and the War on Terror — their votes will definitely count in the upcoming election.

Though I am not a supporter of mixing religion and politics, or of the Democratic Party, I do believe in outreach and really liked what Ms. Vanderslice had to say:

She said that Jesus was all about ”caring for the least, the lost, and the last” and ministering to “those on the margins of society.”  Public policy would do good to remember this, but Christians should be living it.

What a good role model for young Christian girls. :)   A nice example of a purpose-driven life.

  1. Heya Mels, thanks for dropping by earlier (( ))

have you heard of that Catholic movement in South America…i think ‘Liberation Theology’ altho i may be totally wrong about that.
i think the general story was a small town priest started calling for peaceful discussion on landrights down there, and started a very grassroots movement of the local community looking after each other…
i think later it bacame known for its focus on ‘the least, the last & the lost’

    whatever ones beliefs,
    inspirational.

    thankyou for this.

  2. Thanks for the heads-up on Maya. I watched to Comedy Central piece. She did well in an interestingly funny interview environment.

  3. Now THAT is something for a Christian like me to smile about.

  4. Me, too, Mercurial! It was like a breath of fresh air. I think I’m going to follow up on her progress in the future. Thanks for the comment! :)

  5. For a good liberation theology movie, check out Romero with Raul Julia. I saw this movie a long time ago in undergrad school. It was great.

Latin American priests have long been involved in the plight of the poor though corruption and betrayal win over good intentions.

  6. To bad the Christian left had nothing to do with the Christian “Right”. Next we’ll hear God is for gay rights, abortion and “the many roads to heaven”….
